Established in 1994, the American Academy in Berlin aims to strengthen the long-standing intellectual, cultural, and political ties between the United States and Germany by supporting advanced scholarship and practice in the arts, humanities, social sciences, and public policy. Each year, the Academy awards roughly 25 semester-long Berlin Prize fellowships to outstanding scholars, writers, journalists, composers, and artists based in the United States. Fellows pursue independent projects in a residential community at the Hans Arnhold Center, a historic villa on Lake Wannsee. Throughout the semester, they share their work with German colleagues and audiences at lectures, readings, discussions, concerts, and film screenings, which form the core of the Academy’s dynamic public programming.
